TX Road Rage Accidents by Sex and Race

In 2022, there were 2,510 road rage incidents in the state of Texas, according to crash data records from the Texas Department of Transportation. In 1,887 of these incidents, the accident report included information on the drivers sex and race. The table below shows the totals for every road rage accident where both sex and race are known.

Ethnicity Gender Total
WHITE MALE 722
HISPANIC MALE 447
WHITE FEMALE 203
BLACK MALE 192
BLACK FEMALE 141
HISPANIC FEMALE 139
ASIAN MALE 30
AMER. INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE MALE 10
AMER. INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE FEMALE 2
ASIAN FEMALE 1

As the data above shows, the race involved in most road rage incidents is Whites, with a total of 925 incidents (722 male and 203 female drivers). The second highest group is Hispanics, with a total of 586 incidents (447 male and 139 female drivers), followed by Black people, with a total of 333 incidents (192 male and 141 female drivers). Asian drivers were involved in 31 total incidents, while American Indian/Alaskan Native drivers were involved in 12 incidents.

However, we cannot simply take total numbers since naturally, the ethnic groups with the largest population sizes will be involved in the most incidents. So, we look at rates per 100,000 people in that groups population. Ideally we would have data that shows the total number of drivers licenses issued by race in the state who were actively driving in 2022, but since we don’t have that data, we use population metrics to figure out road rage accident rates.

Ethnicity Gender Road Rage Incidents  Population  Rate per 100k
BLACK MALE 192        1,785,730           10.75
INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE MALE 10           111,178             8.99
WHITE MALE 722        9,816,423             7.36
BLACK FEMALE 141        1,920,036             7.34
HISPANIC MALE 447        6,139,310             7.28
ASIAN MALE 30           766,546             3.91
HISPANIC FEMALE 139        6,035,044             2.30
WHITE FEMALE 203        9,992,883             2.03
INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE FEMALE 2           103,104             1.94
ASIAN FEMALE 1           814,837             0.12

The table above shows the number of road rage incidents reported in Texas, broken down by ethnicity, gender, and population. The data appears to be from a single point in time and is not broken down by location or specific type of incident.

To determine which race and sex has the highest rates of road rage incidents, we can calculate the incident rate for each ethnicity. This can be done by dividing the number of incidents by the population for that group, and then multiplying by 100,000 to get the incident rate per 100,000 people. The results are as follows:

As the data shows, black males in Texas have the highest incident rate of road rage incidents, followed by American Indian/Alaskan Native males and white males. Asian females had the lowest rate of rage rage accidents, with only 1 reported case.

It’s important to keep in mind that this data only reflects reported road rage incidents that resulted in accidents. The data does not account for unreported incidents or road rage incidents that did not involve traffic accidents.

Are Males or Females Involved in More Road Rage Incidents in Texas?

If we looked at this data and included the rows where gender was known but the ethnicity was not always known, we can see that there are a number of instances gender was identified but race was not. The data from the TX DOT had value of UNKNOWN, NULL and OTHER, as shown below. We can still count these for determining the percentage of incidents involving males vs females.

Ethnicity Gender Total
WHITE MALE 722
HISPANIC MALE 447
WHITE FEMALE 203
BLACK MALE 192
BLACK FEMALE 141
HISPANIC FEMALE 139
UNKNOWN MALE 31
ASIAN MALE 30
UNKNOWN FEMALE 12
AMER. INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE MALE 10
NULL MALE 10
OTHER MALE 3
AMER. INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE FEMALE 2
OTHER FEMALE 1
ASIAN FEMALE 1
NULL FEMALE 1

The data clearly shows that male drivers are involved in a significantly higher percentage of road rage incidents then female drivers: 1445 (74.3%) vs 500 (25.7%), roughly 3 to 1.
